IS A GREAT  PYRENEES RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Great Pyrenees is a working dog with strong guardian instincts. These traits allow them to think independently as working protectors, these traits also create added challenges such as stubbornness, guarding, desire to wander, and related training challenges. This dog will be large, loud, and strong willed. If given the time, training, patience and love your GP will also be a very loyal friend and protector of your home and family. The Great Pyrenees needs a job or a person and they must bond to their humans first. With or without farm animals, the human family will become the dogs first flock to trust and protect.

Livestock Guardian Dogs: If you do not currently have a mature working livestock guardian dog please anticipate two years of training prior to leaving a Great Pyrenees unattended with livestock and birds.

Fencing: A well constructed six foot fence is suggested as this breed will wonder. GPS collars can add a layer of safety, but a well fenced yard and fence line training for your pup will be necessary.

Grooming: These dogs have a wonderful double coat that actually keeps quote clean but grooming will reduce shedding and related issues. Early grooming and regular ear cleaning and brushing are recommend.

Barking: Great Pyrenees may live inside or outside. They will bark and they should bark. This is part of their job. For this reason the breed is not suitable for apartment living.

Socialization & Training: Our Pyrs will come with a 1 hour training consult in person to local homes or virtual to far away homes. Plan to introduce your Pyr pup to 100 people in the first year of life. AN additional 100+ hours of training in the first year should be anticipated.  Owners should learn about good behaviors to prevent resource guarding, aggression, and stress.

Many Great Pyrenees are given up between one and two years old when they become giant hormonal teenagers. It is extremely important to us  that we set these pups up for forever homes where they will be understood and provided the environment and resources to be healthy and happy Great Pyrenees. There are many resources online about the breed. If this will be your first GP we will encourage you to explore and learn.

Health Tested Parents

Our dogs are both CHIC Certified by the Canine Health Information Center.  The CHIC Certification for breeders is a reliable and credible source for analyzing specific breed pedigrees, their health strengths, weaknesses, and breed confirmation for breeders. To become certified dogs need to pass all the screenings recommend by their parent breed club and have had their results made public.

OFA Screening by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Our dogs hips, elbows, and patellas have been examined by an independent veterinarian board when they were two years old. Although hip dysplasia may not be super prevalent within the Great Pyrenees breed, we feel strongly that well built dogs with correct confirmation increase their odds of long and healthy lives. Hips are rated excellent, good, fair or poor. It is generally considered responsible to only breed dogs with Good and Excellent hips. OFA Results can be seen publicly at OFA.org search the dogs name or reg #.

A dog whose personality can’t be beat, his temperament is one in a million. At almost two years old we are continually amazed with his  calm and gentle disposition. He is very trainable and extraordinarily gentle with his people and animal friends.. He is a natural loyal guardian and has very strong instincts to watch over smaller animals and guard our property. He’s got a gentle old soul way about him that makes him oh so easy to fall in love with.

Bruno is CHIC certified  and clear of more than 200 genetic diseases through both Embark and Gensol genetic testing.

Bruno comes from CHICC plus plus parents (meaning they have been screened for a very extensive list of possible health problems common in dogs). Bruno’s parents also have champion show lines and came from a West Virginia small farm. We are extremely excited to see how his temperament and good looks pass down to his offspring.

She is sweet and kind with loads of personality. The official guard dog of our little kids, she’s always keeping a watchful eye and is happy to join the party! Betty comes from a long line of both working and show pedigrees giving her the traits most favored for the breed. Most notably, both of her parents received an EXCELLENT rating for hips from the OFA.   This is exceedingly rare amongst large breeds and is a testament to her outstanding heritage. The OFA rating system is accepted worldwide for the detection and assessment of hip joint irregularities and secondary arthritic hip joint changes. We are very optimistic that Betty’s pups will have fantastic genetics and live long and healthy lives.
